Plenum Spaces

"I'm designing camera infrastructure for a stadium where fiber runs need to transition from a conduit pathway into a plenum return-air space. What cable rating do I need, and what does NEC Article 770 require for this transition?"

Use plenum-rated optical fiber cable (OFNP) for any portion of the run that enters the return-air plenum.

Why

Plenum spaces are regulated by NEC 300.22(C). Cables installed in these spaces must be listed as suitable for use in ducts, plenums, and other space for environmental air, with documented fire-resistant and low-smoke producing characteristics. For optical fiber, this designation is OFNP.

The test standard is NFPA 262. Plenum-listed cables must meet specific performance criteria: maximum peak optical density ≤ 0.50, average optical density ≤ 0.15, and maximum flame spread ≤ 1.52 m (5 ft).

What this means for your transition

If your pathway goes conduit → plenum, the cable must meet plenum requirements at the point it enters the plenum. Riser (OFNR) and general-purpose (OFN/OFNG) cables are not permitted in plenum spaces — the cable must be rated for the space it is installed in.

Conduit does not waive the plenum requirement once the cable is in an air-handling space.

Where it lives in the NEC (edition-aware)

  • NEC 2026: Optical fiber cable types and permitted uses are in Article 722 (Part VII), specifically sections 722.160 through 722.165.
  • NEC 2020/2023: The same provisions are in Article 770.
  • The plenum requirement itself is NEC 300.22(C) in all editions covered.

Practical note

Many designs standardize on OFNP end-to-end to avoid rating transitions and coordination issues. The cost premium over riser cable is typically small relative to the risk of misclassified pathway boundaries during installation.

Bottom line

Use OFNP. NEC requires plenum-rated cable in air-handling spaces per 300.22(C), tested to NFPA 262 criteria. The optical fiber articles (NEC 2026 Article 722 Part VII / NEC 2020/2023 Article 770) define OFNP as the compliant cable for that environment.
